QWERTY vs Dvorak vs Colemak: Is Switching Worth It?

Sooner or later every person learning to type reads that QWERTY was designed to slow typists down and that a better layout is waiting. The first claim is a myth. The second is partly true and much less useful than it sounds.

Where QWERTY came from

The popular story is that Christopher Sholes arranged the keys to slow people down so mechanical typewriters would not jam. That is not quite what happened. The arrangement separated letter pairs that commonly appeared together, so their typebars approached the paper from different angles and were less likely to collide. The aim was to prevent jams at speed, not to reduce speed.

Either way, the constraint that shaped it disappeared over a century ago. QWERTY survives for the ordinary reason bad standards survive: everyone already knows it, and every keyboard ships with it.

What the alternatives change

Dvorak

Patented in 1936, Dvorak puts all five vowels and the five most common consonants on the home row, so roughly 70 per cent of typing happens there compared with about 32 per cent on QWERTY. It also strongly favours alternating hands, so consecutive letters tend to fall to opposite hands.

Colemak

Designed in 2006 as a pragmatic compromise. It moves only seventeen keys from their QWERTY positions and deliberately leaves Z, X, C and V where they are, so the copy and paste shortcuts your hands already know still work. Home row usage lands around 74 per cent. It is generally the easier of the two to adopt because so much muscle memory carries over.

The honest verdict on speed

This is the part usually left vague. Controlled comparisons have consistently found the speed advantage of alternative layouts to be small, in the range of a few per cent, and much smaller than enthusiasts report. The best-known evaluation of Dvorak, carried out for the US General Services Administration, concluded that retraining costs were not recovered by the productivity gained.

The reason is that at ordinary speeds your bottleneck is not finger travel distance. It is how quickly you decide what to write and how reliably you execute the movements you have rehearsed. Shortening the distance your fingers move optimises something that was not the limiting factor.

Comfort is a different question, and here the alternatives have a real case. Less finger travel and more alternation genuinely does reduce strain over a long day. People who switch overwhelmingly report that typing feels easier, even when their measured speed is roughly unchanged.

What switching actually costs

  • Four to eight weeks at reduced speed for Colemak, longer for Dvorak, during which real work is slower and more frustrating.
  • A period of typing badly on both layouts before the new one settles.
  • Every shared or public computer, every colleague sitting down at your desk, and most locked-down work machines stay QWERTY.
  • Application shortcuts assume QWERTY positions, so anything keyed to letter positions rather than letters can end up in awkward places.

The decisive question is not which layout is better designed. It is whether your current typing problem is finger travel. For almost everyone it is not: it is that they never learned touch typing properly on the layout they already have.

Who should actually switch

Consider it if you type for many hours a day and experience genuine hand or wrist discomfort that better posture and breaks have not resolved, and you can afford two months of reduced output. Consider it too if you simply find the project interesting, which is a perfectly good reason.

Do not switch if you currently type at 40 WPM using four fingers while looking at the keyboard. Learning proper touch typing on QWERTY will take you to 60 or 70 in the same time a layout switch would take, works on every computer you will ever sit at, and costs nothing.
